Lettuce - Fly

Admittedly I had never heard of Lettuce and only picked up the album because reading Lettuce “Fly” made me laugh. Upon listening, I discovered quickly that Lettuce is without a doubt a jam band. Jam band is one of those genres that I can get into live but do not enjoy much over a record. Despite the style not being one of my favorites, there is no denying these guys have funk in their souls. Entirely instrumental except for “Do It Like You Do,” the whole album has a smooth groove with heavy influences from the 60’s to the 80’s. With eight members the sound is diverse and full. “Madison Square” is the standout instrumental track and the one track with vocals, “Do It Like You Do,” is the incredibly smooth and easy to listen to. All in all, Lettuce may not be my cup of tea but I can appreciate funk when I hear it.
