Artist:
Jessica Hoop Album: Kismet Label: Columbia Records
Synopsis:
Although the arrangement of the tracks on her demo CD are far superior to the
ones on her debut, Jesca Hoop remains one of the best
female indie singers out there (THE best, in my opinion). Her voice is deep and mysterious in some ways
and in others it’s soothing and angelic.
She combines these qualities to create perfect harmonies. Her intricate and beautiful melodies are
simply eargasmic (yes, I said it). Each of her songs has a unique sound that
literally gives me goose bumps every time I listen to them. Maybe I’m obsessed. Oh, and sometimes she sings with a really
weird accent that’s somewhere between British and something I think she made
up. Somehow, it works.
Recommended Tracks:
*2. “Seed of Wonder” – Definitely one of her
best songs. This song has an incredibly interesting melody and is
completely unpredictable. It pulls you
in right away and is like a fantastical story – you just have to find out what
happens next.
*9. “Havoc in Heaven” – This is her best song, in my opinion. The
imagery in the lyrics and the haunting, rhythmic melody, combined with Jesca’s rich voice, evoke a scene that is like something
out of a scary dream. Scary,
but beautiful.
